Carrie Underwood and her ‘All-Star Holiday Special’: What a nice seasonal surprise it was
Carrie Underwood has beaten the odds: at a time of the year when TV is clogged with Christmas specials, she managed to put one together that stood out. It had something for everyone — singing, sentiment, silliness, and sex. And she made its charms last for a full two hours.

When I first read Underwood’s eclectic guest list — Dolly Parton and David Cook, no surprises there; but Kristen Chenoweth and Christina Applegate, too? — I thought, uh-oh, this could be a trying-to-please-everybody bland-fest. Instead, this varied line-up proved to be one of the strengths of the evening. Yes, she sang an impeccable duet with Dolly, a stark “I Will Always Love You.” But she also offered a sweetly raucous tribute to ’60s girl-group pop, as Underwood, Chenoweth and Applegate, in pink prom dresses and beehive hairdos, powered through a fine medley of songs such as “Leader of The Pack,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and “Be My Baby.”

Fast National ratings for Monday, December 7, 2009.
FOX actually got a solid audience for its Carrie Underwood holiday variety special, solid enough that we can probably expect to see the “American Idol” winner in future network programming, but the country superstar was no match for CBS’ comedies, which dominated in the demo and set the network up for a comfortable Monday win.

Overall, CBS averaged an estimated 12.2 million viewers in primetime to go with a 7.4 rating/12 share. FOX’s 5.3/8 was good for second, with an average of 8.54 million viewers. ABC’s 4.5/7 and the 3.8/6 for NBC followed. The CW’s 1.5/2 trailed.

FOX started the night in first with a 5.5/9 for “Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special.” CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” and “Accidentally on Purpose” were second overall with a 5.3/8, but won the hour in the key demo with a 3.2 rating. NBC’s repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” finished third. ABC’s “Santa Claus Is Comin’” was fourth with a 4.4/7, but second in the key demo. The CW’s new “One Tree Hill” had a 1.6/3 for fifth.
